“Spring Breakers”: Boobs on the Big Screen

I really had no idea what I was getting myself into when I saw the new movie Spring Breakers. The first thirty seconds of the movie’s intro quickly changed that. There were so many college girls exposing themselves on a beach during the always-anticipated college spring break.  The nudity can be understandable with so much drug and alcohol use, which were also major parts of the film. I’m not normally one to be uptight about these things in movies, but it was ridiculous in this movie. Although this movie is oddly intriguing, I do not feel it should be shown in theaters.

Do these look like role models to you?

It was a very artistic move to make a movie with a believable concept like spring break and totally change the idea of it. I also found the camera angles to be very unique and captivating. I did not like the artistic touch of the repetition of the same dialogue over and over and over again (if you go see the movie, you’ll definitely know which line I’m talking about). The plot was extremely unbelievable and took a lot away from the film, so that the only thing exposed was the actors and actresses themselves. I will not spoil the ending of Spring Breakers for those of you who want to waste a lot of money seeing it in theaters, but I will tell you that the plot is not very believable for a few college girls on spring break.

Although I am not usually uptight about nudity, violence, or drug and alcohol use in movies, a film with extremely popular actresses in mainstream theaters is probably not the best idea. The actresses in Spring Breakers are current “it-girls” of the media. Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez were both Disney Channel stars. Ashley Benson is on the popular TV series Pretty Little Liars on ABC Family. They were all on family-based channels at one time and are role models to young teenage girls. Actresses with these kinds of traits have expectations from young fans (and their parents). Role models from these kinds of family-based channels should not be allowed to appear on mainstream movies that contain controversial actions.

Spring Breakers was a very artistic film; however, it should not be shown in mainstream theaters where so many young people go to see the movies their favorite actors and actresses are in. Due to the popularity of the actresses among younger people and the illegal and sexual acts in the movie, I believe the rated “R” label should be changed to a “NC-17” and be taken out of the popular theaters.
